BaltoIn 1925 the city of Nome, Alaska was besieged with diphtheria. Shakespeare GardenCreated in 1913, this 4 acres garden features the plants and flowers of the English countryside that inspired many of Shakespeare’s writings.You will see rosemary and pansies referenced by Hamlet’s Ophelia, thistles from Much Ado About Nothing and even a white mulberry tree which is believed to be inculcated from a tree planted by the Shakespeare himself in 1602!

Turtle PondTurtle Pond rests at the foot of the famed Belvedere Castle and gets its name from a flourishing turtle population. The first turtles were released here by their owners in the 1980s and since then the population has exploded.The pond is actually the last remnant of the Croton Water System which was the first steady source of clean water for the city.

Great LawnSpanning over 55 acres, the Great Lawn lives up to its name. It has become a favorite spot for baseball games, picnics and sunbathing.Lots of concerts have been held here drawing thousands of people. Biggest crowds were recorded during Elton John (300,000 attendees), Simon and Garfunkel (500,000 attendees) and Diana Ross concerts (800,000 attendees).

Azalea PondAzalea Pond is a favorite spot among bird watchers because birds flock there for the gentle stream and tall trees. The Pond is so named because of the 100-year-old Azalea plants that offer a gorgeous pop of color amongst all the greenery.This area was designed to be reminiscent of the rugged and beautiful Adirondacks.

Untermyer FountainThe Untermyer Fountain was donated to Central Park after the death of Samuel Untermyer in 1947. The fountain is a cast of the original fountain in Berlin and it remained at Untermyer’s residence until his death.No one knows how Samuel Untermyer was able to get the cast made, but it has become a favorite addition to the Conservatory Garden.

Burnett FountainThe Burnett Fountain is seen as a memorial to the famed writer Frances Hodgson Burnett. It is placed in the English part of the Conservatory Garden is depicts characters from her novel, The Secret Garden.Mary and Dickon look perfectly happy just enjoying their time in their own secret garden in Central Park as Dickon plays his flute and Mary watches the birds.
